Improving Speech and Language in Children with Autism using Video Modeling

Hi everyone,

I have to say I’m finding video to be a great way of explaining all of the concepts and techniques that I have to share with you and also for bringing to life many of the examples that will help with applying these tips to your own situation. So I hope you’re enjoying them too!

This week’s tip focuses on how you can improve your child’s articulation and speech clarity skills using a technique called Video Modeling. There are many ways to improve articulation, but Video Modeling is one technique that I’ve found to be very effective over the years with the children I treat.

So anyway, I created a quick, step-by-step guide to show you exactly how you can use Video modeling to help your child’s articulation and speech development. So if your child is struggling with this then I think you’re going to find this video tip particularly helpful.

It goes for about 10 minutes.

    Hello Monica
I do always go through your news letter and other relevant information , but my daughter is not speaking. she sometimes make sound at her own, but when we tried to talk to her she stops and close her eair.
If you kindly let us know that you have any facility where we can visit and take my daughter, so that she learn how to communicate.

While I won’t necessarily be using this process myself, it seems very useful and inspired me to try something similar using my cue cards. Instead of using my sons generic cue cards, I am going to make them look like dominoes, something he really likes. I’m hoping that will increase his motivation.

‘Speech sounds on cue’ has been effective, it also has australian voices. I take the mouth close ups and use them with youtube or family videos.I add sound effects from The Simpons as well. I use video to show social situations as well. If any one knows of any video modelling sites can they let me know please.

    Hello Monique,
    Congratulations on your pregnancy :0)
I am really enjoying your video tips.
The video modelling one was really good because my son Henry has started paying much more attention to my mouth when I talk and his own and practices different movements in the mirror!
At the beginning of the year he was making groaning sounds now he has a wide range of babbling including some sounds which he uses in context eg na na na for no.
It is lovely to see him becoming more social with his langauage.
You do a wonderful job thank you so much.
    Jennifer Smith (Henry’s Mum )

    • Hi Jennifer. Thanks for the kind words. It’s truly wonderful when they start expressing their thoughts and feelings through their language. I’m very happy for the progress you’re making. Keep it up!

  6. I have actually done video modeling with my two boys both on the autistic spectrum. I have found however that using the Watch Me Learn dvd’s are the best thus far. My boys learn through imitation of other children. They see the child on the Watch Me Learn dvd do an activity and they imitate. The Watch Me Learn dvd collection is the best I have ever used with my boys. They have learned how to tie their shoes, play tag and hide and seek, duck duck goose, how to greet a peer, how to interact socially with other children, and how to act appropriately on a bus. I would encourage any mom that is looking for that special something that will “work” to try the Watch Me Learn dvd collection. www.watchmelearn.com. These dvd’s were created by a mom, (Mary Beth Palo) that has a son with autism. He learned through her dvd’s and my boys have as well!!! I can’t say enough good things about video modeling and the Watch Me Learn dvd’s!!!!!

  7. Hey Monique, we are doing a bit of video modeling using the iPhone 3GS which has a video function (finally) the screen is perfect for viewing straight away. And it uploads very quickly. Plus the kids really love it.

I showed your DVD 2 to a newbie parent who is going for assessment next week. She really “got” why and what her son’s sensory behaviours are about as a result, and especially liked the jargon explanations. You shouldn’t have to get a university education to understand a professional working with your child, but that is how some of them communicate – whether intentionally or not.

So your approach is very refreshing! xx

    • Thanks Lisa. I’m so jealous about the 3Gs. We have the earlier model (with no video), but have still managed to get some of Siena’s favourite tv shows and DVDs on it for her to watch, which I have to agree is BRILLIANT! Great idea about using it for video modeling.

Keeping things simple and easy to understand is something I always try to incorporate into my therapy and training resources. For most parents autism is a totally new world, with it’s own lingo and language which can be very confusing and is just another barrier in the way of them being able to help their child. So I completely agree that parents should NOT require a university degree simply to understand their own child!

  8. You cannot believe how long ive been searching for something like this. Scrolled through 6 pages of Google results and couldn’t find anything. One search on Bing. There you are!… Really have to start using it more often!
